Insurance cover: COVID-19 vaccinations

The Federal Government has announced a No Fault COVID-19 Indemnity Scheme to cover health professionals administering the vaccine where the efficacy of the product causes injury.

Minister for Health and Aged Care, Greg Hunt, assured:

"Health professionals administering vaccines will be able to continue with their crucial role in the vaccine rollout with assurance that the claims scheme will offer them protection.”

The details of the scheme have been finalised following extensive consultation between the Australian Medical Association (AMA) and the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA).

More details regarding this scheme can be found here. To offer further protection, Professional Pharmacists Australia's PI Insurance provides the following cover:

  • Legal defence costs relating to a complaint to the regulatory body, AHRPA.
  • Bodily injury caused by incorrectly administering the injection.
  • Anaphylaxis risk of administering a vaccine - cover for alleged malpractice in administering and/ or issues with support offered while delivering a vaccine.
  • Administering too much vaccine leading to an alleged injury.
