Game of Fair Wages is an industrial fight that pits our hardworking pharmacists against the Lower and Upper Houses of Australia.
The pharmacists sacrifice their time with family and friends to care for the community – on weeknights and weekends, for appalling pay and conditions.
Over the last two seasons, the Coalition – controlling both Houses, has cut penalty rates. They have been supported by the Guild, who are more interested in lining the pockets of their members than protecting pharmacists.
Onside with pharmacists is the Union – Professional Pharmacists Australia (PPA), who are fighting to get better wages and conditions and reclaim their penalty rates.
The Coalition – The Army of the Dead
Like the Army of the Dead, the Coalition have turned a blind eye to the working Australian. They pose a threat to anything resembling a decent living wage. The cost of living is rising but wages are going nowhere. The pharmacists are being turned into zombies living off the bare minimum. Is this human?
In 2017, under the promise of more jobs and more hours for workers, the Federal Government cut the pharmacists’ penalty rates.
There and then began the Game of Fair Wages – an ongoing battle between The Union and The Coalition to earn back the pharmacists’ penalty rates.
The Guild – The Lannisters
The Guild hoard all the gold for their members, the pharmacy owners while stabbing pharmacists in the back. For this reason, many pharmacists love to hate the Guild as much as they do the Lannisters.
The Pharmacy Guild of Australia applied for and won a cut to Sunday penalty rates from the Fair Work Commission. The members of The Guild are the pharmacy owners. So, if you’re not a member of the Guild, you are their enemy or so it seems!
The Union – PPA
We are the good guys marching for Winterfell. We are fighting against The Army of the Dead. Fighting for a fair wage and better conditions for all pharmacists. We are union members sticking together to fight for a just cause.
Right now, we are faced with the ultimate EPIC evil.
EPIC Pharmacy have proposed to cut wages for pharmacy workers’ wages and conditions. This offer is a serious blow to the standard of pay, conditions and patient safety in private hospital pharmacy in Queensland.
EPIC’s current deal will see pharmacists with five years’ experience lose over $15,000 per year from their wages! They will be paid $95 less per Sunday worked.
Members have taken protected action, now EPIC are withholding up do 79 per cent of their pay!
The final season?
This year, we look to Change the Rules and earn pharmacists a fair wage and better conditions. Under the current rules, a fully qualified pharmacist earns the same hourly rate as a labourer. This is despite completing six years of tertiary study.
PPA have won the commitment of the Labor Party to restore penalty rates for pharmacists.
Be warned, the union movement is coming! This year, on May 18th – will be the final march of the Army of the Dead.
